Dualtype is a browser extension that shows a translation of the message you are typing on WhatsApp Web, and keeps the phrases you send as a personal review deck. This policy describes exactly what the extension can see, what it does with it, and where it goes. It is short because the extension does very little.
The short version. There is no Dualtype server. We do not collect, receive, store, transmit or sell any of your data. We cannot see your messages, your phrase deck, or your settings, because none of it ever reaches us.
Text you type into the WhatsApp Web message box, and only while the translation
strip is turned on. The extension reads the message box on web.whatsapp.com so it can
translate what you are writing.
The extension does not read your received messages, your chat history, your contacts, your phone number, your profile, or any other part of WhatsApp. It does not send messages, modify messages, or act on your account in any way.
The extension runs only on web.whatsapp.com. It has no access to any other website you visit.
When you pause typing, the text in the message box is sent to the translation provider you have selected in settings, and to nowhere else. You choose the provider:
| Provider | Where your text goes |
|---|---|
| MyMemory (default) | api.mymemory.translated.net — privacy policy |
| LibreTranslate | The server you configure. If you point it at your own machine, the text never leaves your computer. |
| DeepL | api.deepl.com — privacy policy |
| Claude (Anthropic) | api.anthropic.com — privacy policy |
| Google Cloud Translation | translation.googleapis.com — privacy policy |
Your text is handled by that provider under their privacy policy, not ours. If you would rather no text left your machine at all, run a local LibreTranslate instance and select it in settings.
Text is sent only when you have typed at least two characters and then paused. Messages longer than 1,200 characters are not sent at all. Repeated phrases are served from a local in-memory cache and are not re-sent.
If your chosen provider fails, the extension shows you an error. It does not reroute your message to a different service. There is an off-by-default setting that permits falling back to MyMemory when a provider fails; if you turn it on, the strip tells you each time it happens. A LibreTranslate server of your own never falls back, whatever that setting says.
The optional contact email. MyMemory offers a higher free daily limit to requests that carry an email address. If — and only if — you enter one in settings, it is included in requests to MyMemory. Leave that box empty and no email is ever sent.
Everything the extension stores lives in your browser's local extension storage
(chrome.storage.local) on this computer:

storage — to save your settings and your phrase deck on this computer.web.whatsapp.com — to read the message box and draw the translation strip above it.localhost and 127.0.0.1 — so you can point the extension at a LibreTranslate instance running on your own machine. No other permissions are requested. The extension does not request access to browsing history, tabs, cookies, downloads, your clipboard, or any site other than those listed.

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and material changes will be noted in the extension's store listing.
